Key concepts

The dodocast glossary: what an account is made of and how the parts fit together.

On this page

How it fits together

Account ─ plan, balance, default settings
├─ Project ─ members, storage, access and appearance for its media
│ └─ Media ─ an uploaded video in several qualities
├─ Playlist ─ a collection of media from any project: course, series, cinema
├─ Broadcast ─ one video aired on a schedule
 ├─ 24/7 channel ─ a program of media on a loop
└─ Background video ─ a silent clip for your site

A project groups media only. Playlists, broadcasts, channels and background videos belong to the account and can use videos from any of your projects — that is why they live under Catalog in the menu, not inside a project.

Access and appearance settings are inherited: for media — account → project → media; for a playlist, broadcast or channel — account → the item itself. To set your own, turn off Inherit from project (for media) or Inherit from account on the item's tab.

Project

A folder for videos with shared settings: members, storage, and default access and appearance. Switch projects at the top of the left menu; the Project section of the menu contains Media, Members and Settings for the selected project. Learn more in Projects and team.

Media

A single uploaded video. After upload, dodocast prepares several qualities from it (up to 1080p, depending on your plan) for adaptive streaming: the player picks the quality that fits the viewer's connection. Each media item has a code — a short 10-character ID used in the watch page URL and in stream links.

You can add a cover, audio tracks and subtitles in different languages, chapters, downloadable materials and a watermark to a media item — each on its own tab.

Playlist

An ordered collection of your media with a shared page. Watch page layout sets what viewers see:

LayoutUse it for
Standarda collection of videos
Minimal — player onlyjust the player, no description or list
Seriesepisodes with an episode strip
Courselessons with a table of contents and completion marks

A single video also has the Cinema layout — a dark page with a full-width player; a channel has On air, with "now" and "up next" lines. A video in a playlist can be closed to standalone viewing — then it is visible only inside the playlist.

Broadcast

One uploaded video aired at a set time. Two modes:

  • Live — a sliding window: viewers join at the current moment and cannot rewind. You can turn on looping.
  • Premiere — a scheduled showing: before it starts, the page shows a countdown; during the showing, viewers can rewind to the beginning but not skip ahead.

After the broadcast ends, the link can keep showing the recording as a regular video.

Files only

A broadcast plays a video you have uploaded. dodocast cannot yet take a stream from a camera or encoder.

24/7 channel

A round-the-clock stream: the Programme is a list of media that plays on a loop, and the Schedule holds shows at specific times that air in place of the program. A channel serves its schedule (EPG) as JSON for your site or app. All videos on a channel must match its qualities and aspect ratio — you set these when you create the channel.

Background video

A short silent clip for a website background, cut from a segment of your media: a main file, a lightweight version for phones and a poster image, all at permanent links. There is no player — it is just an MP4 for a <video> tag.

Watch page and embedding

  • Watch page (the console calls it the storefront) — the public page of a video, playlist, broadcast or channel on watch.dodocast.com. Watch page layout sets the layout, appearance sets the colors; the viewer picks the light or dark theme.
  • Embedding — the same player in an <iframe> on your site. You can allow it everywhere, nowhere or only on specified domains.
  • Direct links (HLS) — stream URLs for your own player, app or Smart TV, in fMP4/CMAF and MPEG-TS formats.

Publishing and access

  • Publication — whether the watch page is visible and embedding works. Unpublished items return 404 to viewers.
  • Access policy — who can watch: Public, Password, Private link (a secret in the URL) or Playlist only. Access also applies to direct stream links.
  • Signed links — stream links with a signature and an expiry time for your site or app. Learn more in Security.

Account and balance

An account has one plan and a balance in US dollars. Anything beyond your plan is charged to the balance at the prices in Plans and limits.
